DEFAW was established in response to the urgent need for change in the lives of women in Afghanistan. Defenders of Equality, Freedom and Advancement for Women (DEFAW) stands as a beacon of hope for over twenty million Afghan women and girls. Rooted in the vision of a just and equitable society, DEFAW is more than an organization; it is a movement driven by the relentless pursuit of gender equality. Our story is one of resilience, empowerment, freedom and unwavering commitment to the cause of Afghan women’s rights.
Our Journey
Founded under the leadership of acclaimed Artist and Women Rights Activist, Aryana Sayeed, DEFAW emerged as a response to the pressing challenges faced by the women and girls in Afghanistan. In a nation where their voices were silenced and opportunities curtailed, DEFAW aims to become a platform for change. Our mission is clear: to advocate for the fundamental human rights of Afghan women, ensuring their equal, fair, and just access to education, employment, social participation, and freedom from violence. Through advocacy, awareness, networking, and outreach, we strive to create a future where every Afghan woman can thrive, unfettered by societal constraints.

DEFAW does not represent a single individual or a limited group of women whose names and images you might see on this platform. DEFAW aims to become a permanent and reliable hub for the international community to connect with for any initiatives related to the freedom, education, empowerment, and progress of women and girls in Afghanistan. One of our main priorities is to be a steadfast platform that amplifies the voices of women who are being silenced and suppressed within Afghanistan.
